In a departure from the last Parliament, the Trudeau government has assigned a Parliamentary Secretary to each of the regional development agencies. This is a return to the practice of past governments and an apparent nod to the current political climate in the country.

Further to the announcement of Parliamentary Secretaries, yesterday it was announced that the roles of these members would be reverting to a more traditional role in the 43rd Parliament. The government has moved to reinstate parliamentary secretaries' ability to be voting members on House of Commons committees, returning to what had been the practice prior to the 42nd Parliament. That will mean that Parliamentary Secretaries will play a larger role in the function and activities of House of Commons standing committees, although it remains to be seen if this group of Parliamentary Secretaries will behave similarly to those from previous governments in this role.
