MEDIA ADVISORY BLUESKY EXPERTS AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT ON EMERGENCIES ACT AND PARLIAMENT BEING RECALL

OTTAWA, March 23, 2020 – Today in his daily address, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said nothing is off the table in terms of curbing civil liberties, including provisions under the Emergency Measures Act and the Quarantine Act. One of the key elements of the Emergencies Act is that it overrides the provinces. That's why he has been watching closely as provinces have invoked their own Emergencies Acts. He added that he will be speaking to the Premiers tonight about measures that can be taken.

The Bluesky team has outlined what can be expected if the federal government decides to initiate the Emergencies Act. That insight has been posted on our website.

The following members of Bluesky Strategy Group are available to comment on the Emergencies Act and the recalling of Parliament:

Lt.-Gen. (Ret’d.), the Hon. Andrew Leslie, PC, CMM, MSC, MSM, CD, MA, Senior Associate served as the Chief Government Whip and then Parliamentary Secretary focused on the Canada-U.S. relationship, interacting with business leaders and elected officials at federal and state levels and establishing Canada’s place in the world through international trade and cybersecurity. He is available for commentary in both English and French. @HonAndrewLeslie

Susan Smith, Co-founder and Principal at Bluesky, has provided senior private and public sector clients with strategic communications, lobbying and public affairs and media relations advice and training for more than 25 years. Susan regularly appears on CTV’s Power Play with Don Martin, CBC News Network, CPAC Inside Politics, on national radio, and as a featured speaker and panel moderator at major events. @susansmithott

Neil Brodie, Vice President, joined Bluesky after three years at the Ontario Energy Board. He has a decade of experience advising key decision-makers in Ottawa during the Harper government and was Chief of Staff to three ministers. He worked on the Leader’s Tour for four national election campaigns, travelling across the country working with the leader, local candidates and volunteers. Neil’s public policy background includes procurement, trade, public safety, industry, finance and energy. @neilbrodie

Hon. Joe Jordan, P.C., Senior Associate, was the former Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, former Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and in 2003 was sworn to the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada. Joe has also held membership on the Heritage, Environmental, Procedure & House Affairs, Public Accounts and Government Operations & Estimates Standing Committees of the House of Commons. A regular contributor to The Hill Times, Joe writes and speaks extensively on the relationship between business and government.

Geoff Turner, Senior Consultant, has had an extensive career at Queen’s Park in Toronto, where he served as a key political advisor to senior provincial ministers. Having years of hands-on experience with cabinet, caucus and opposition members, legislative and cabinet committees, executive and front-line political staff, and working with a host of senior public servants, media and stakeholders, Geoff brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding about the politics, policy, communications and decision-making processes at work inside and around government. Geoff regularly appears on CTV’s Power Play with Don Martin and True North Politics, CBC News Network, CPAC Inside Politics, and Strategy Session on CFRA. @GeoffTurner_ca
